If you slice a cake in 8 equal pieces and Emily eats 3 pieces of the cake, you say that she ate the 3 eighths of the cake, that is to say the fraction of the cake. fraction is a fraction. The figure on the top is called numerator and the figure on the bottom is called denominator.
A fraction is always equal to a number : fraction.

Comparing simple fractions

Obviously the fraction 3/7 is smaller than the fraction 4/7. If two fractions have same denominator, then the greatest fraction is the one that has the greatest numerator.

On the other hand, if two fractions have same numerator, the greatest fraction is the one that has the smallest denominator. Hence the fraction 2/9 is smaller than the fraction 2/8.
